Review of External Trade Statistics of March 2004 |

According to the provisional figures compiled by the Federal Bureau
of Statistics, exports from Pakistan during March, 2004 amounted
to Rs.58,656 million (Provisional) as against Rs.51,981 million
in February, 2004 and Rs.54,141 million during March, 2003 showing
an increase of 12.84% over February, 2004 and of 8.34% over March,
2003. |

In terms of US dollars the exports increased by 12.67% in
March, 2004 $ 1,021,005 thousands (Provisional) when compared with
February, 2004 $ 906,219 thousands and by 9.13% as compared to March,
2003 $ 935,609 thousands. |

Exports during July-March, 2003-2004 totalled Rs.512,236 million
(provisional) as against Rs.461,479 million during the corresponding
period of last year showing an increase of 11.00%. |

In terms of US dollars the exports during July-March, 2003-2004
totalled $ 8,902,236 thousands (provisional) as against $ 7,856,038
thousands during the corresponding period of last year showing an
increase of 13.32%. |

Main commodities of exports during March, 2004 were Cotton cloth
(Rs.8,829 million), Bedwear (Rs.7,011 million), Cotton yarn (Rs.6,211
million), Knitwear (Rs.6,190 million), Readymade garments (Rs.4,090
million), Towels (Rs.1,983 million), Made up articles (incl. other
textile) (Rs.1,978 million), Rice basmati (Rs.1,886 million), Art,
silk & synthetic textile (Rs.1,586 million) and Carpets, rugs
& mats (Rs.1,085 million). |

Imports into Pakistan during March, 2004 amounted
to Rs.81,162 million (provisional) as against Rs.65,356 million
in February, 2004 and Rs.73,522 million during March, 2003 showing
an increase of 24.18% over February, 2004 and of 10.39% over March,
2003. |

In terms of US dollars the imports increased by
23.99% in March, 2004 $ 1,412,751 thousands (provisional) as compared
to February, 2004 $ 1,139,393 thousands and by 11.20% as compared
to March, 2003 $.1,270,516 thousands. |

Imports during July-March, 2003-2004 totalled
Rs.604,149 million (provisional) as against Rs.530,125 million
during the corresponding period of last year showing an increase
of 13.96%. |

In terms of US dollars the imports during July-March,
2003-2004 totalled $ 10,502,113 thousands (provisional) as against
$ 9,029,849 thousands during the corresponding period of last
year showing an increase of 16.30%. |

Main commodities of imports during March, 2004
were Petroleum crude (Rs.7,674 million), Petroleum products (Rs.6,874
million), Road motor vehicles (Rs.2,960 million), Iron & steel
(Rs.2,645 million), Plastic materials (Rs.2,570 million), Palm
oil (Rs.2,331 million), Textile machinery (Rs.2,304 million),
Electrical machinery &: apparatus (Rs.1,240), Medicinal products
(Rs.1,239 million ) and Tea (Rs.1,088 million). |

Based on the provisional figures of imports and exports the balance
of trade in March, 2004 was (-)22,506 million in terms of Rupees
and (-)391,746 thousands in US dollars. The balance of trade figures
cumulative from July- March,2003-2004 were (-) 91,913 million
in terms of Rupees and
(-) 1,599,877 thousand in US dollars. |
